Mobile phone company Nokia and video eyewear specialists Vuzix signed up to a technology license agreement to both develop and create see-through waveguide optics for near-eye display systems, that led to the Smart range of Augmented Reality visors/glasses

These are Optical See-Through visors, i.e. the wearer views the real world directly whilst a computer generated element is projected onto a partially reflective mirror inside the visor. Optical See-Through visors are more comfortable to wear and have a better field of view than the alternative, Video See-Through visors, where the wearer looks directly at video screens that usually encompass their whole field of view.

Under the agreement Nokia granted Vuzix access to their proprietary see-through EPE (Exit Pupil Expanding) optics technology, and in return Nokia are able to access the products and components Vuzix develop for use in Nokia products.

Nokia's EPE was developed over the past decade and should allow sunglass-style eyewear to be mass produced at an accessible cost. EPE technology generates an expanded exit pupil without compromising magnification or resolution.

Paul Travers, Vuzix President and CEO, said of the new technology, “Integrate this Nokia technology with Vuzix’s advanced display engine developments with partners like Fraunhofer IPMS, and we expect to be able to offer the video glasses that Hollywood and Sci-Fi writers have only been able to imagine.”
